R&J Beck No. 3 brass binocular microscope – circa 1870

An exceptional example of the Beck No. 3 stand in binocular form. Measuring 15 " tall in closed position, it is signed, "R & J Beck, 31 Cornhill, London, 5402", on the optical tube. Coarse focus is rack and pinion, fine focus with an indicator knob on the rear of the slide stage. The eyepiece width is rack and pinion adjustable. The mechanical slide stage has full lateral movement with a rotating slide holder. All rack work is in excellent functioning condition. The plano-concave mirror is excellent with some typical age veining. This is a Wenham prism design of exceptional binocular quality, with three original objectives and three pairs of binocular eyepieces. The lenses include a 2/3", a 4/10" with correction collar, and a 1/5" with correction collar. All come in matching brass, signed canisters. The optical system is further enhanced with three lieberkuhn slip-on adapters, a side parabolic reflector in its own oval brass case, and a parabolic condenser with adjustable dark spot for dark field viewing. Additional accessories include a stage forceps, camera lucida (working but with a line crack in its optional filter), twin nosepiece adapter, live box, monocular extension tube, and three dark wells for making a dark background when using the lieberkuhns. In addition, a cased set of viewing discs with opaque disc revolver, and pliers for holding the small disks accompanies the set. All are housed in the original hand dove-tailed mahogany case with key, but broken lock. The case is in very good usable condition, noting a repaired crack on the rear. The microscope is finished in lacquered brass. The coverage is nearly complete with some wear overall. This is a very complete and excellent example of the No.3 model by Beck. Equipped with an extensive optical system of high end Beck objectives, this Wenham style binocular functions as fine as it looks.
