telescope by W & S Jones – circa 1830
An exceptional example of a table stand telescope by W & S Jones. The telescope is a 5-draw with a 2” lens. It is 10” long when closed and 44” long at full draw. It is signed on the eyepiece draw, “W. & S. Jones, 30 Holborn, London.” William and Samuel Jones were opticians at that address from 1800-1860, which helps to date the instrument to circa 1830. It is finished in lacquered brass with a mahogany grip. The overall finish is complete and in excellent condition. The optics are original and superb for an instrument of this age. The telescope has its front lens cap and a rear eyepiece cover. It is rare to find instruments of this age is such fine aesthetic and optical condition.
