|Bausch & Lomb Continental microscope – circa 1898
A stately example of a Bausch & Lomb model BB continental microscope. It is signed, "Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. New York, Rochester, N.Y., Chicago". The serial number on the rear of the base is 28625 and dates the instrument to1898. It stands 12" tall when closed. Coarse focus is rack and pinion; fine focus by a micrometer knob on top of the limb. All rack work is in excellent working condition. The sub stage Abbe condenser has a variable iris diaphragm with a second iris diaphragm above the condenser and level with the stage. A second accessory condenser holds three different stops. The plano-concave mirror is in excellent condition. The optical system is comprised of three original Bausch & Lomb lenses and two eyepieces. The lenses are a 16mm, 4mm, and 2mm oil, each with an accompanying brass canister. The eyepieces are numbered 1, and 2 . The optics are excellent. There is a separate dark field condenser. The stage is a Bausch & Lomb removable mechanical unity, which functions smoothly. The finish on the microscope is lacquered brass. The lacquer coverage is 100% with minimal age spotting. The instrument is housed in its original case. The case is in very good condition with brass handle, lock and key. Inside are two slide out holders for lenses and eyepieces, and a blue filter. This is an exceptional, usable model of the classic continental style. The instrument appears to be in excellent condition.
