Compass microscope

An exceptional compass microscope with red leather case and ebonized handle.  The microscope is 5" long as shown, and is strikingly similar to an instrument (number 381)  in the Billings collection where it is dated to post 1738..  The case measures 3 3/8" x 1 3/4" x 1".  The lens with lieberkuhn is in excellent condition.  The microscope is finished in lacquered brass with blackened eyepiece.  The lacquer is complete and in very fine condition, as is the case and accessories.  A very important instrument in the early development of the microscope, this instrument disassembles to fit in a compact case, enabling it to be easily transported in the field.  Compass microscopes of this vintage and condition are not often found in such a fine and complete state.
