Equinoctial Dial by Lorenz  Grassel 18th century

A fine equinoctial sundial by Lorenz Grassel, circa 1770 with an octoganal face measuring  2" across.  The instrument is signed underneath, "L. Grafsl.", which would refer to Lorenz Grassel (1740-1805) who worked in Augsburg and is most known for his pocket dials.   The compass with original dial is in fine working condition.  The face plate is decorated with flowers and vines.  City elevations are inscribed on the base.  The dial folds to fit in its original leather case with brass clasp.  The case is no longer hinged and shows drying with some leather missing around the edges. The dial is an excellent example of its type by a well known Augsburg maker.
